An Exclusive Moment with Fly Equinox Founder Nicolai Jensen

The hangars at O. R. Tambo International are quiet tonight, a calm before the storm of tomorrow's inaugural flight. For one man, the silence is filled with reflection. On the eve of a historic day, we sat down with Nicolai Jensen, the veteran pilot who founded Fly Equinox, to discuss his journey and the unique feeling of entrusting his dream to the men and women he personally hired to fly the first flight.

"I’ve spent my life in the sky, flying for decades," he tells us, with a broad smile on his face. "Every flight has been an opportunity to connect with the world. But now, it’s about a new type of connection. It’s about building something that others can take pride in and experience for themselves."

Jensen's transition from the cockpit to the corner office was not without its challenges, but he sees a clear connection between the two roles. "As a pilot, your flight plan is about navigation and precision. As a CEO, the flight plan is about building a company that operates with that same level of detail," he explains. "My experience taught me that success isn't just about the big picture; it's about the thousand small details that ensure a safe, smooth, and enjoyable journey."

This philosophy is embodied in the name of the airline itself. When asked about the origin of "Equinox," Jensen shares a personal memory from a long-haul flight. "I was flying an overnight route, and as the sun rose, I saw the exact moment of the equinox—a perfect balance of light and dark. It struck me that this was the balance I wanted for our airline: a balance between our operational excellence and the warm, human element of customer service. We wanted to find that perfect moment in the sky for every passenger."

This vision is now in the hands of the crew he handpicked. "The true joy is watching the talented men and women we've hired take control," Jensen states. "We spent months finding people who not only have the skills but who share our vision for service. It's a profound feeling of pride to know that they are the ones making this dream a reality."

As the conversation draws to a close, Nicolai's eyes light up with a final, poignant detail. The inaugural flight is scheduled for August 15th—a date that is no coincidence. It is his birthday. When asked if the two are connected, he simply smiles and says, "Of course they are. It's the best birthday present I could ever ask for—a dream finally taking flight."
